Either you're living in a very different part of England to me, or you are confused with lacrosse, which is much more commonly played by girls than boys.
I must live in a very different part of England to you
Phil Boswell , as though I have heard of lacrosse, I have never seen a game or even heard of one being played near me. Hockey is nothing like lacrosse from the dictionary description, which is all I have to go on.
I didn't say hockey was girly, I said that many males I know consider it to be girly. One of my boyfriends at college played hockey, but was very careful not to let the information into public knowledge because of the amount of teasing he got for being in a hockey team. I guess the fact that he wasn't very tall didn't help.

But I admit the idea of an ice hockey stick makes slightly more sense, than the alternative.
There is an Ice Hockey team here in Coventry, but though I'm told they are quite good I have never seen them. There is no local hockey team, male for female. Where I played hockey in secondary school both my daughters played football (OK, soccer to the US).
