I will Answer this only because you seem to be serious, however it is IN THE BOOK Well defined.

a Chala is the Marat word for Totum. like Walker is Deroga's Chala
And it seems to be reverse-applicable as well.  Tavi also calls Kitai his Chala because he also receives some cross-over characteristics from her (night vision and heightened senses).

I think its rather endearing when Tavi calls Kitai "Chala". Its cute too lol.

Could they reproduce? most probably. Gaius even mentions the fact in Cursor's Fury, that since neither of them have furies to prevent it, a child could come into the picture. As for the two of them mating, I wouldn't say that they have a ton, because in the same convo, Tavi says that they only do other stuff... that ISN'T intercourse... though that could well have changed in the three or four years since that convo. But I agree that scientifically the child would be infertile.

Well... here are the choices of endings which make sense in the context of a book:

1.  They can have children and they get married and thus we get something of a happily ever after.

2   Kitai dies, so that Tavi is free to marry (his step-grandma?) without guilt and make an heir, and interspecies breeding becomes a non-issue.

3.  Tavi abdicates so that he can stay with Kitai, and interspecies breeding becomes a merely intriguing issue.

4.  Tavi marries an Aleran and keeps Kitai as consort.

5.  Tavi and Kitai break-up for the good of the realm.

6.  Tavi dies, and interspecies breeding becomes a non-issue.

6. <insert the possibility I missed, add your own number if needed>

In the first possible ending, they can cross breed, and in in #3 it could happen too (but unlikely, why abdicate if they can make babies?)
Now you have to look at the choices and think about the characters and what they would conceivably do and then consider what that devious crack-pusher Butcher would do and that should narrow down your choices...

I would think that they could it just hasn't really been attempted until now. I think Tavi has been one of the few Alerans in constant contact with a Marat and hasn't yet been eaten.

Not in the sense of a meal, but I get you.

I think that both Tavi and Bernard both have a very strong work ethic and they'll just keep grinding away, so to speak, until they're successful.    Wink

Oh my.... what would a hormonal, pregnate Kitai be like, from that one tale that Daroga told about drinking the wrong soup, Tavi would be in for it.... Hell hath no fury and what not.....
