Ok, as the Grand Finale comes nosediving towards us, I started re-reading the whole series from Furies of Calderon to Princeps. Whilst reading Furies of Calderon, a few things struck me as interesing. The main thing being the relationship between Tavi and Kitai, and ultimately their relationship to the Vord Queen.

Now, in Furies of Calderon, Tavi and Kitai are pitted against each other in a battle of Wits, and are tasked to receive a Blessing of the Night mushroom from the center of the Wax Forrest. Now in this sequence, a lot is going on. Tavi is fighting for the fate of his home, Kitai for her rite of passage away from Doroga.

What strikes me funny is that Doroga seems to be using this situation for more than just getting Clans Gargant and Horse out of fighting Second Calderon. He mentions to Hashat right before the trial begins that Kitai is almost close to bonding with someone, and at the end of the story he seems to realize and approve of the bonding, equating it to that of him and his mate.

That's the first thing, the second thing is that Tavi and Kitai woke up the Vord Queen while picking up the Blessing of Night Mushroom. And here is what we know:

-Tavi pricks his finger on the thorns of the mushroom, leaving blood,
-the croach began reacting to the blood, and then the Queen begins to Fully awaken.
- It (the Queen) is described as being half born, as if it hadn't finished becoming what it was meant to be.
- After escaping the Forest, Kitai bonds with Tavi, she later claims in Academ's Fury that she saw his eyes and wanted them

Now, here's where things get really weird:
- The Vord Queen, two years after awakening, makes a beeline straight for Tavi, following his scent.
- There are several instances where the Vord have outright ignored Tavi and Kitai, meanwhile, they are actively seen striking the first blow against many other opponents
- The Vord Queen looks like Kitai
- The Vord Queen, and her Canim counterpart, have Tavi's green eyes

This is what I think: That during the bonding, Kitai was both envenomed by the Queen, eating the blessing of Night that grows right outside of the Queens Mound and in the process of bonding with Tavi, whose blood is seemingly responsible for awakening the queen. With all of these factors (or just a few of them) I think what we have seen here is a three way bonding. The Marat and Vord are species of assimilation. While the Marat bond to understand other species, the Vord shift in order to control and make the species like their own. Perhaps Kitai bonded with Tavi and The Queen. What if they are locked in some sort of triangle where they are all in the same boat.

Keeping this theory in mind, look at this scenario:

Tavi and Kitai are both (initially) motherless children. Neither one of them knows the feeling of being raised by a mother, of having a "proper" family under their societies standards. They only seek comfort and solace in each other and through their bond.

As we see in the Prologue for FLF, The Queen is fascinated heavily by the mother and child, not understanding it. And intead of just making it all apart of "The Purpose", as the Vord Queen in AF called it, it keeps the family alive and wishes to replicate the "family meal" with Invidia. The Queen has been described by her Canea counterpart as being erratic, it's producing infertile children (which is a possible psychological clue). What if it, like Tavi and Kitai, are trying to find their place in a "family". But unlike the Marat and Aleran, has no one to share the emotions it is experiencing, and cannot begin to grasp them.

What do you think?

Hmmmm....that's a lot to think about.  I follow the theory of the Vord being from off planet, sent to follow their One Purpose (which seems to be to wipe out endemic life, replace it with vord and croach).  If the queen was woken up before she was fully formed, and somehow bonded with Tavi, that might distract her from her Purpose, and cause enough confusion for the Alerans to survive.  Of course, I wonder what that would mean for the beings that sent the Vord? (if any did, of course).
