I'm still kinda new at this too, but I think there are two ways to do it. You can either highlight the text that contains the spoilers and click the little button up top that has an s and a highlighted p, and that puts the spoiler code in for you, or you can type the code in yourself:

[ spoiler ] Type your spoiler-ific text here [ /spoiler ]

(only, delete the spaces in between the square brackets and the word spoiler (and "/spoiler" --the forward slash (/) means "end").

To start the spoiler tag: [ spoiler ]
To end the spoiler tag: [ /spoiler ]

Just take out the spaces.

Please clarify something for me about the spoiler zone, because I am slightly confused.
If this is an area wherein everyone is forewarned that spoilers abound, why is there so much blacking out of text?  Isn't the point of a spoiler zone that you can post spoilers and not have to worry about them ruining someone's day?  It sort of takes away the purpose of a post when you read something like, "Oh, I loved it when ***** **** '**** *****'" and everything after "when" is blacked out.
Unnecessary pain in the neck to have to edit almost every post to see the quote that has been spoiler tagged when you are in a spoiler section to begin with.  Is there a master setting that disables this tag if it just bugs you?  If not, there should be.

The spoiler section is for discussing recently released books but a lot of people don't wish to be spoiled regarding future works - hence spoiler tags.  Then too, for a while following book release, direct quotes are spoiler tagged on the forum because some members have yet to read the book(s).  People do come to the spoiler section to discuss older books, to speculate on future books, and not just to read up on the newest work - one reason why current title and spoiler must appear in thread title.  Most of us just try to err on the side of caution.

Huh  Don't know what you'd be editing, but to read the spoiler simply right click & highlight the blackout area {as you would for copy/paste}.

If you open it in an editor (quote it) you can read the text.

My observation/complaint is because I was trying to read a thread where the whole point was favorite quotes and they were mostly blacked out.  What a pain in the neck that is, especially with how fast some of these threads grow.

Control-A -- all text on the page is selected -- all spoiler tags revealed. One keystroke. Click anywhere that's not a link -- all text is no longer highlighted. Takes me about .1 seconds.

Folks should also take note that there are ways for people to view new posts across multiple boards (or at least there was at one point or another) so part of the point of spoiler-tagging even in spoiler sections is that it'll protect people who aren't intentionally looking at the spoiler boards, just the forum's new posts in general. It's a minor part, but it's there.

I would like something clarified, please.  I don't think mlc is asking about titles or items not in the spoiler section?

If you're in the Spoilers section, and the title includes [Changes Spoilers], you don't need to black out Spoiler info in the actual post, right?  If someone clicks on a thread that includes [Changes Spoilers] in the title, they should expect spoilers?

I'm just saying there's a reason why people might want to anyway, but it's not mandated, you're right. Smiley

Why are we using the blackout spoiler tags and not the "click to view" kind?

Because the click to view one bit my ass when I tried installing it, and I much prefer this kind.
