Thanks for the podcast. You both hit the nail on the head for me. For me January -July 2007 was a combination of my birthday(which is really in October) and Christmas. Somehow I went from buying $2.00 books to the entire Dresden Files/Codex books. I have the Season I on Itunes and the DVD I get next week.
I somehow ended up with a new computer to play my Itunes. I have the 4th Codex book and the next
Dresden Files on order for April 2008. The Dresden Files RPG is my next goal and then the short stories.
I may have to permanently change my birthday to April.
My goal is to focus on the RPG instead of the T.V. unless I find out there is something I can do to support the T.V show. In the meantime I am hoping to hear about the Codex series. My co-worker will start on
White Knight then straight into the Codex series.

WOW. I did not realize the publishers tripled their print run on White Night. Every bookstore in my area was sold out after the first day.

Serious apologies, folks...Logitech normally makes excellent products, but the mic on this headset is horrible (speakers are fantastic)...I practically had to swallow the mic to get what you heard.
Soon as finances allow, I'm putting down 150 bucks on the external USB Turtle Beach soundcard & surround sound headphones, and hoping thier mic is good.

Thanks, Fred and Mickey. It still stings to hear about the show's cancellation, even though we assumed as such months ago. I look forward to the Alera Love episode! (And hopefully then I'll have some real news to report!)

I'm definitely looking forward to the Alera Love podcast. Athough I don't feel comfortable calling in myself. I would like to point out, though, that your description of Bernard riding an air-borne chariot and calling upon the strength of Brutus is technically impossible. He'd need to be in contact with the ground to call upon Brutus.  |

Sure, but I didn't say anything about Brutus. He *was* using a bow that could only be drawn by someone with "furycrafted" strength, IIRC, in that scene.

This is where they turn their talents in upon themselves to get some rudimentary "buff" type effects -- greater strength and durability for earthcrafters, for example. That's strength of the earth. A pile of bricks with an attitude and a desire to turn your face into pulp -- that's Brutus.  |

Ah. I see what you're saying. But to me: Brutus = Earthcrafting, Earthcrafting = Brutus. Brutus is simply a manifistation of Bernard's ability to earthcraft.
My interpretation has always been that one can either furycraft (and thus be able to 'summon' one's named fury), or one can't. Being in the air denies him all of his earthcrafting ability. That's my understanding of it.
Engolfing characters in an opposing element has been used many times throughout the books to deny crafting ability.
Besides. I think I recall a scene similar to the one you described. I believe that he woodcrafted the bow, instead of earthcrafting himself.
( I'm beginning to feel obligated to call in. Bugger. It was a trap! )

Well, that's a very "country Aleran" view on the world, but I don't think it covers the entire span of what furycrafting entails. Suffice it to say my idea of it *includes* yours... but maybe you can call in to geek about your own vision of furycrafting. |

Sorry to come late to the geeking out battle, but I have to agree with David on Bernard's crafting. Bernard is a strong guy on his own: he big and beefy. But to use fury-crafted strength he has to be on the ground. He is strong enough to draw the bow without access to it, but not fully. He can still shoot, but as we saw in CuF the shots were not as powerful as normal because she couldn't get the full draw. In the areal battle, the only fury-crafting Bernard could use was his woodcrafting. He was still accurate, but the shots were not hitting like a ton of bricks.
BTW: good podcast, as always.

This makes me wonder how strong these internal buffs are cause in the very first book in the second chapter we see that Air and earth counter each other with Amara buried and Fidelias unable to break free cause he is hung 10 inches above the ground. Is that so say that he's still strong just not enought to break his cage or that he finds himself weakend with out contact with the earth... and in the second Book where Isana is unable to use any of her fury crafting do to the lack of water around her. P.S. going back to the quote isn't durability more a metalcrafting "buff"? |
