Jumping in on when Deirdre got a coin discussion; I'm guessing that she did not grow up with a fallen--probably more of a coming of age thing, and possibly later than we're imagining (why hurry when she'll be immortal). She is control of the relationship, and I just don't see that happening with her being influenced from an early age.

I tend to agree.  She has a fairly distinct personality, though I suppose it's technically possible that the entity we're calling 'Deirdre' actually is a particular Fallen playing the role.  I really doubt that, though.

I'd say she was born, raised, and carefully groomed to be what she is by Nicodemus and Tessa, probably especially the former, Tessa seems more like she'd be off doing her own semi-random thing at any given time.  Deirdre definitely seems fonder of her father (too fond, some would say) than she does of Tessa.

Here's an interestingly ghastly possibility that would fit Nicodemus and Tessa all too well:  suppose they've had a bunch of kids, letting them compete for the 'honor' of a Coin, and offed the failures?

Nic seems to actually be nice to Deirdre and care about her (whether this is wholly or partially self interest to have a powerful and loyal assistant or true caring I don't know). Tessa seems to think more short term and not treat her daughter with caring.

Maybe they still have the usual mommy-daughter issues.  after all immortals have a long, long time to get really nasty with each other and honestly, my sisters and mom could get really nasty, something my brothers and I didn't even come close to with our father.

I've commented before that Nicodemus and Deirdre's relationship, twisted and incestuous as it is, is one of the only instances of human feeling we've seen among the Denarians.  What does it say about the Order of the Blackened Denarious that an incestuous father/daughter relationship is one of their better moments?  Huh

I'm not so sure they are actually father/daughter. Ivy mentions the name of deidre before she had the coin and the name of her father and also goes on to say that her father didn't treat her well or something like that. Don't qoute I haven't read smf in a while Ill go look it up later and come back and edit this post.

The person Ivy is talking about in the section you refer to is Tessa, not Deirdre.
