Pat Elrod was selling advanced copies (she's the editor, she's allowed) of the anthology this weekend, 2 weeks before they hit the shelves.

*It's good. Some novel writers make horrible short story writers (and vice versa), and I swear I remember Jim mentioning at some point that he's in awe of folks who can write short stories. (As a short story writer trying to make the leap to novels, I'm in awe of novel writers.) If my memory is correct, it doesn't show here...he handles it well. It's like a side or opening adventure that leads to a larger development in a Dresden novel, only it's self contained. Leaps and bounds ahead of the original Dresden short where we meet Murphy on a troll bridge. You've come a long way, baby.

*Jim is evil. The reference to Bubba Hotep is a classic.

This is the first I'm hearing about a short with Murphy at a toll booth?  Has Jim written other shorts before this one?

Troll bridge, not toll bridge.  A world of difference in just one letter! Cheesy  That story, called "A Restoration of Faith," can be found here.  Jim's other short story/vignette, which focused on a conversation between Harry and Bob over the Yellow Pages ad, can be found here.

I thought it was too.  Is it not?  Have we all been mistaken this entire time?

Well, I thought that the restoration of faith short story was pretty good, so if Jim's short story writing has improved that much, then I can't wait for it either.

Just wanted to report that Charlaine was astounded that ya'll had gotten early copies. She is a contributor and didn't have a copy yet. I think she is going to phone Pat Elrod tonight! Smiley

I think it was purely an avenue of opportunity...Pat got several advance copies to sell early because she was at a con where Jim was a guest Wink When she waved them at a panel, he hadn't gotten a copy yet...she announced it by asking him for an autograph Wink
